According to a recent short informal survey on personal information management from among my blog readers and (almost 100 respondents), over 70% said they keep the following personal documents in paper form: contracts still in effect, expired contracts, legal documents (wills, powers of attorney, etc), warranties (currently owned appliances), and receipts for major purchases (currently owned appliances).
Hopping over the question of whether paper is the right media for these records (how about scanning them?), the high percentage of paper begs the question of where are people keeping the paper?
Are these paper documents that many of us have protected in a fireproof safe or a lock box away from our home, or are they just sitting in an unprotected file cabinet somewhere? It is incredibly important to protect our files paper or electronic so if a fire, flood, etc does happen we are prepared.
