We've all seen those shows where people bring old things they've found in their attic and have them evaluated by an expert and find out that they are worth a lot more than they thought.
I recently got a call from a long-time AIIM member who was trying to determine the value of a Storage Tech 7440 Optical Media Unit, and realized that I had absolutely no idea how one would go about this, so I thought I would ping the network.
Of course, valuing old technology is a tricky thing and predicated on when a particular items flips from just being plain old and outdated to having historical value. There have been some upward blips over the years in the value of consumer technologies like the Apple II and Commodore 64, largely driven by bidding on eBay. But I know of no way to figure out the value of older business technology. And what might drive the value? -- odds are there isn't the same kind of nostalgia that flips consumer tech from the old to the historical and thereby drives up value.
Any ideas? If so, I'll pass them along to the AIIM member who posed the question.
Maybe at the next Antique Roadshow in our area I'll show up with a 5.25 drive and see if anyone bites. I've got one in my desk.
BTW, here's what a Storage Tech 7440 Optical Media Unit looks like...
